What does it mean to buy wine in bond?
Wines “in bond” have not yet had the duty and VAT paid on them. They must be stored in a bonded warehouse approved by Customs & Excise. They must be purchased by the unmixed case and are not available for delivery or consumption within the EU until duty and VAT have been paid. When you choose to have the wines delivered in France or anywhere in the EU, these taxes become payable.
How is the wine stored?
Your wine is stored in the Geneva Free Port which is a state-of-the-art, secure, bonded warehouse with strictly controlled temperatures (+13°C) and humidity. Before entering the warehouse, bottles and their packaging are assessed and checked to ensure that we can guarantee the perfect condition of everything we store. For added peace of mind, all wines are insured at purchasing value.
Can I buy En-Primeur wines?
Yes you can! Also known as Wine Futures, En Primeur is a way for anyone to buy the most highly-demanded Bordeaux wines 1-2 years before they are bottled and released on the market.Wines are purchased exclusive of duty and VAT, then usually shipped two to three years after the vintage. They can only be purchased by the unmixed case.
Why buy En-Primeur wines?
The biggest advantage of buying wine futures is price. The En-Primeur price of a wine is almost always lower than the release price on the market. Buying wine futures also allows you to buy the most highly demanded wines that may be virtually impossible to find when they are released on the market in a variety of different formats such as half bottles, magnums and larger-sized bottles.
If you are considering buying wine en primeur, it’s important to choose a reputable wine merchant. Whenever you buy a product that will be delivered at a much later time, there is a risk you won’t receive your wine. You may have heard stories of merchants who have filed for bankruptcy, stored wine in poor conditions so it spoiled, or engaged in wine fraud. To dramatically lower that risk, look for an established wine merchant who has been in the wine trade for years, is financially solvent, and will store your wine properly.
At Vintage we can assist you according to your tastes, requirements and budget to choose your En-Primeurs wines, then store your wines in the best storage conditions and deliver them when and where you wish.
How much do you charge for storage?
It costs €2/bottle/year (prorated charges apply for different sizes) for storage and insurance.
What happens when I withdraw my wine from storage?
When wines are delivered, unless they are exported or transferred to another bonded warehouse, duty and VAT are charged at the prevailing rate on the original cost of your wine. Only full-cases can be delivered.
- For delivery in France and Singapore : €3/bottle for a minimum of 90 bottles, subject to tax and duties
What if my order has arrived with broken bottles?
If your bottles are delivered broken, then please contact our team at Vintage. Your order will be replaced or reimbursed at purchase price.
